Tilicho Lake Trek, which is one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake is situated at a stunning location in the Annapurna region at an altitude of 4,919 meters. Tilicho Lake is the destination of one of the most popular side hikes of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The hike takes additional 3–4 days. No camping is required, as new lodges have been built between Manang and the lake. Final approach to the lake is done in a day hike from the lodge at Tilicho Base Camp.
Tilicho Lake Trek starts from Beshishahar, and goes along the Marsyangdi River, with the great view of the Manaslu and the Himal Chuli in the west. The fine village and the wide diversity of the ethnics group along the route make our trek more interesting. The first part of the trail is same as Annapurna Circuit Trekking, from Manang we will go to the main valley to the west through the Khangsar Village and trek up to Tilicho Lake, then the trail goes to Yak Kharka and joins the normal Annapurna circuit route and cross the Thorong la Pass 5,416m.
Representatives from Himalaya Trekking Team will welcome you at Tribhuvan International Airport upon your arrival. Then they will transfer you to the hotel for one overnight stay.
This trip can be taken by private car or bus. Today we will head toward Beshishahar passing Trishuli and the Marsyangdi river. Overnight at Beshishahar.
After breakfast we drive to Chamche, It takes around 6 hrs. The trail then heads down where you will see rice and grain growing areas as well as waterways. We have our lunch at Chamche and Start our Trekking to Taal, Overnight at Tea House.
After breakfast at Taal we follow the uphill trail alongside the Marsyangdi river and head towards Karte, also called Khotro. From there we shortly reach Dharapani. This place has more facilities. There are temples and monasteries. From Dharapani we head towards Bagarchhap. Moving ahead we pass Timang and Thankchowk and finally reach Chame. Chame is the headquarter of Manang district and there is also a unique large white gate. Overnight at Chame.
Today the trail continues up and down, passing several rivers and sparsely populated settlements. We walk through a steep and narrow valley to have our first view of Paungda Danda rock face, a dramatic curved rock face rising 1500 m from the river. From here, we also gain excellent views of Annapurna 2 to the south and Pisang Peak to the north east. We descend to the Manang Valley floor enjoying the captivating landscape. Overnight in Pisang
From Pisang there are two routes to Manang. We choose the one which passes through Upper Pisang via Geru as it guarantees outstanding views of Mt. Annapurna, Pisang Peak, and others. As we near Manang, the climate becomes colder and drier. However, a short visit to Barge Monastery, the biggest monastery in the Manang District, should cheer us up. Overnight in Manang.
We will hang around for one more day in Manang for acclimatization by observing beautiful views of green landscapes, silvery mountains, Chortens and Monasteries. We can also explore unique culture and lifestyles of local people.
After enjoying an awesome day at Manang, we will leave for Khangsar. We will go by a path which goes along the Khangsar River. Crossing the river, we will reach at Khangsar village. This village is a very old-styled Tibetan influenced village and is also known as olden type villages of Nepal. Overnight at our guesthouse inclusive.
We continue from western pass on a large path, passing a Gompa (monastery). The route ahead goes on a recently constructed path up towards a high ridge. At one point is an intersection. One path maintains the altitude, traversing the slopes towards a place where the valley is narrow; the other continues to ascend towards the line of the ridge. The former is the old path, and is much more difficult as it goes on really steep screed; the latter is the new path that goes a completely different way. Continue along the new path, reach a high crest, and descend on switch backs carved out through the screed slopes to a side valley of the main valley. At its bottom is a brook. On the other side of it is a building known as the Tilicho Base Camp at elevation of 4,200m. This is where rest out for an Overnight at a Tea House.
After the initial tough ascent, our trail traverses onto a moraine and then cuts along the side of the mountain. However, the spectacular views of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Khangsar and Muktinath peaks are always close by to cheer us up. Upon reaching Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, we get to admire its tranquil beauty. Sometimes reflections of the surrounding peaks are seen on its turquoise waters, at other times the lake remains frozen. We take a break beside the calm waters and soak-in the astounding views before heading back to the base camp. Overnight in Tilicho Base Camp
When returning from the Tilicho Base Camp, the trail leads out of the Marsyangdi valley and the abrupt change in surroundings can be noticed as the trees are left behind and replaced with more alpine vegetation. Our trail continues through the ruins of the old Khangsar village, until we cross a log bridge over the river between Gumsang and Yak Kharka. The typical Himalayan village of Yak Kharka is an accolade to its name, as lots of yaks can be seen grazing and standing around. From here we also get breathtaking views of Annapurna III. Overnight in Yak Kharka.
It is an uphill walk to Thorang Phedi. After walking for some time, we cross a suspension bridge and reach Ledar village. We ascend further and pass through towering cliffs before reaching Thorang Phedi, the last village before Thorong La pass. On this trip we are rewarded with one of the best views of Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorung Peak and Mt. Khatungkan. The word Phedi in Nepalese is referred to as the foot of a mountain. Overnight in Thorang Phedi.
Crossing Thorong La pass, one of the highest passes in the world, will be our ultimate objective today. We will be crossing the pass from east to west (Manang to Muktinath) which is the easiest and safest direction. We get up around three in the morning and walk up the mountain. When we finally make it to the top, we realize that our journey was worth it. We can take a few photos before heading to Muktinath Valley at the foot of the Thorong La pass. Overnight in Muktinath.
Today is the last day of our trek on these wonderful mountains, we will move through the trail of Kagbeni or Lupra to reach Jomsom. This day we will trek along Kali Gandaki River to reach Jomosm. Jomsom is a strong windy little town in a cold valley. You can get startling memorable views of Tilicho Mountain and beautiful wet hills.
We fly to Pokhara after breakfast. The flight itself is spectacular; we fly while looking at views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and over the deepest gorge in the world. The warmer climate in Pokhara will definitely make us feel better. We can take a boat ride in the serene waters of the lake with the reflection of the Fishtail Mountain on its waters. We could also visit the Davis falls. In the evening, we can stroll around the lakeside area and buy souvenirs for loved ones. Overnight in Pokhara.
You will have the option of flying or using road transport to Kathmandu. By road it will take about 6 hours. Overnight at Hotel.
Today your journey in Nepal will come to an end; unless you are staying longer in Kathmandu. The Himalayan trekking team will meet you, collect your luggage and transport you to the airport. AMS (acute mountain sickness) is a serious issue. It is the result of the failure of the body to adapt to high altitude and can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness. It usually occurs above 1,800 meters and the likelihood of being affected increases as you ascend. The way to reduce the affects of altitude is to ascend slowly, 300 meters per day above 3,000 meters until you have acclimatized. Poor acclimatization results in headache, nausea, sleeplessness, difficulty breathing and swelling of fingers and glands. The only cure for AMS is to descend to lower altitude and your guide's decision on this matter is final. When you are planning to trek above 3,000 meters we recommend not walks faster. If you will get altitude sickness please consult with your guide to go down at least 500 meters to recover.
