Mardi Himal trek, a newly opened trekking is best for three amazing days above tree line on the Mardi Himal ridge with a close-up view of Machhapuchhre Fishtail Mountain. This is a fantastic trek of 7 days duration (the whole trip is 12 days). The absolute highlight is spending three days above the tree line on the Mardi Himal ridge with the most awe inspiring close up views of Machhapuchhare, the Fishtail Mountain, the most beautiful and photographed mountain in the Himalayas after Mount Everest. Looking back, you can see from Pokhara all of the way down to the border with India. The sunrises are spectacular, with the sun bursting onto the very tips of Machhapuchhare and the Annapurna range.
On the way up to the ridge during this amazing trek to Mardi Himal, you will walk through dense forest and possibly see monkeys and yaks. Nights are spent in lodges in clearings in the forest and there are nearby viewpoints to see the sunrise over the mountains. The final day is an enchanting walk out along the valley through charming villages, ending at a beautiful waterfall.
The ridge leads to Mardi Himal summit (5,588m) just below the south face of Macchapuchhre. But you barely notice Mardi Himal, as the view of Machhapuchhare above and the Annapurnas beyond is so breathtaking. You will spend two nights at high camp (3,800m) acclimatising, and have the opportunity to walk even further up the ridge until you can see into the glacial basin between Macchapuchhare and Annapurna where Annapurna base camp located, with Annapurna 1 towering above. The optional highest point of the walk is the base camp of Mardi Himal itself, nestling on the lower south facing slope of Macchapuchare amongst snowy peaks and glaciers.
The Mardi Himal trek gives you the most amazing sense of having been right up on the roof of the world amongst some of its highest mountains.
This trek is slightly longer than the Poon Hill Trek but has far fewer people, closer views and fewer steps. Having only opened recently it is less well known. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for Mardi Himal trekking in Nepal.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu. (1350m).
We will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Look for the Himalaya Trekking Team display board with your name on it at the arrival gate. We will then escort you to your Hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (850m), 200km, 6 hrs drive.
After an early breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel and travel by tourist bus to Pokhara. The scenic journey takes about 6 hours. As an alternative, you can opt to fly to Pokhara from Kathmandu. The 35 minute flight has majestic views of high Himalayas. Overnight in your hotel in Pokhara. Pokhara is a lovely sleepy town on the edge of a lake with lakeside restaurants and interesting shops. You can take a boat out on the lake to a temple on an island.
Day 03: Drive to Phedi and trek to Dhampus (1600m), 30 minutes drive and 3 hrs walking.
After breakfast at the hotel, we drive for half an hour drive to Phedi and then our trek begins! We start with a steep climb up to Dhampus village which is a big Gurung village spread over the hillside. It has spectacular panoramic views of the Annapurna mountains. Overnight at a lodge with a full view of the Annapurna Range. If you rise early you will see the beautiful sunrise burst onto the peaks of the mountains.
Day 04: Trek from Dhampus to Forest Camp (2480m), 6 hrs walking.
We leave the cultivated village land and head into the forest. There is a chance we may see groups of wild monkeys among the forest of giant rhododendron, oak, maple, hemlock and birch. We arrive in a small clearing and spend the night in a lodge. In the early morning it is possible to go to a nearby viewpoint and see the sun rise magically over the mountains.
Day 05: Trek from Forest Camp to Low Camp (3150m), 5 hrs walking.
Today we follow the ridge through the forest towards Machhapuchhare, the sacred Fishtail Mountain. As we climb, the flora has turned to classic 'cloud forest' with mosses and lichen, tree ferns and orchids hosted by the hardier trees. Now and then, there are windows in the woods that look out onto thrilling panorama – towards Himchuli, Annapurna South and we have spectacular northerly views of the ever-closer 'Fishtail'. Overnight in a lodge. Again it is possible to go to a viewpoint in the early morning and see the sun rise over the mountains.
Day 06: Low Camp to High Camp 3800m, 4 hrs walking.
Today we burst out above the tree line and the full beauty of the magnificent ridge leading to Machhapuchhare is revealed, weather permitting. The breath taking beauty of the mountains is wonderful and you feel as though you are right up on the roof of the world. This is the highest camp at 3800m. Overnight in a lodge.
Day 08: Rest day at high camp / optional walk to higher viewpoints.
From this highest camp it is possible to walk further up the ridge to get even closer to the mountains, even looking into the icy valley containing Annapurna Base Camp. Annapurna 1 also becomes visible from this higher point. The route is initially quite steep and then becomes less so as you climb. Overnight in the lodge.
Day 07: High Camp to Siding Village 1280m, 5 to 6 hrs walking.
After breakfast, we go back along the open ridge with its marvellous views down towards India and back towards the Annapurna range, until we reach Low camp. We might encounter yaks on this part of the journey. Then we turn into the forest and descend 1,600m to Siding Village. Hiking sticks are very useful for this descent. You can see the welcome sight of the hotel below as you descend, and it is marvellously positioned high up in the village. Overnight in a Hotel.
Day 08: Trek from Siding Village to Pokhara, 3 hrs walking.
The walk today from the hotel is very gentle downhill along a track and is absolutely lovely, passing through the beautiful village with its fields and simple farms. As an alternative you can take a jeep from near the hotel, but the walk is enchanting and really recommended. It ends at a beautiful waterfall where you can have lunch before taking a jeep back to Pokhara. The jeep journey is also beautiful as it travels out through the Mardi Khola Valley.
Overnight stay in your hotel in Pokhara.
Day 09: Fly or drive back to Kathmandu, flight 25 minutes or drive 200km/6hrs driving.
After breakfast at your hotel, we transfer to the airport for a flight to Kathmandu, explore Kathmandu Valley on your own and then join us for a farewell dinner. Alternatively you can take a scenic 6 hr drive from Pokhara to Katmandu. Overnight stay at hotel.
Day 10: Final departure.
After breakfast, we will transfer you to international airport for your flight back to home. We wish you a safe and sound flight back home and hope to see you again in the future.
I completed the mardi himal trek with OB and his team. It was a great experience. It was very efficiently organised and the Nepalese hospitality was always authentic and warm. OB has a quiet and unassuming presence that provides a lot of reassurance and ensured that the trek was safe and enjoyable.

I have just been on my second amazing trek with OB. He organised a wonderful trip to Mardi Himal for a group of 7, some of whom hadn't trekked before. The pace was excellent and the walk absolutely beautiful with sunrise over the Annapurna Range and Machapuchare. The porters were from OBs village and were very kind and fun to be with. Himalayan Trekking Team are a really caring family-run business. OBs daughter Manju met us in Kathmandu at the start of our trip and took us to our hotel. It is also really nice to support OB and others from their village in the Gorkha district since all of their houses were destroyed in last year's earthquake. They are so cheerful and positive it is amazing.
