Want to discover the wonders of Upper Mustang, but cannot manage the time? Or simply prefer not to trek all the way to Lo-Manthang? Himalaya Trekking Team has the perfect alternative for you!
Our Upper Mustang Trek by Jeep takes you deep into the long-forbidden Kingdom of Mustang in the comfort of a private 4x4 jeep, stopping along the way to explore all the major sights and absorb the truly unique atmosphere of this remote enclave of Tibetan culture.
Once only accessible by foot, after several days of walking along the Kali Gandaki riverbed, the region is now connected to the rest of Nepal by road, making a round trip possible.
We follow that road through vast barren landscapes dotted with medieval villages seemingly untouched for centuries, past ruined forts perched on red and ochre cliffs and impressive monasteries rich in ancient Buddhist art, all the way to Lo-Manthang and beyond, to the Tibetan border.
An unforgettable cultural experience and adventurous journey into contrasting Himalayan landscapes of stone, earth and wind.

After a short briefing with our trekking guides, you begin your sightseeing tour, using private transportation. The Kathmandu Valley is home to no less than seven World Heritage sites. Accompanied by your guide, you visit four of them: the famous Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath temples, and Durbar Square in Patan.
Early in the morning, we take a tourist bus to Pokhara [884m], a 200-kilometre journey along a very scenic route. If you prefer, you can fly instead. Your guide will transfer you to your Lakeside hotel. You will then have the rest of the day to relax and explore Nepal’s second largest town, wandering along the shores of Phewa Lake and absorbing magnificent views of the entire Annapurna range, Manaslu [8156m], Machhapuchhare [6993m] and Dhaulagiri [8167m].
Driving: 7-8 hours / Flight time: 20 minutes.
Early in the morning, we take a 25-minute scenic flight to Jomsom [2720m], Mustang's administrative headquarters. We drive to Kagbeni [2800m] and stop briefly northern end of the village, where a police checkpost marks the beginning of the restricted area. We have our special permits stamped. Our journey into the Kingdom of Mustang begins here. Following the ancient, windswept salt-trade route along the Kali Gandaki River, we finally reach Chhuksang [3050m]. The afternoon is then yours to explore the village.
Flight time: 25 minutes.
Driving: 4 hours.
After breakfast, we resume our drive. Today’s route goes through Chele [3100m], Samar [3620m], Ghiling [3570m], and Ghami [3510m]. These old, photogenic villages, with their flat-roofed houses tightly packed together around narrow alleyways, are typical of the region and home to some of the last vestiges of traditional Tibetan culture, including ancient Buddhist gompas adorned with exquisite murals which we stop to visit.
Driving: 5 hours.
After breakfast, we take an excursion to nearby villages and monasteries, and then make a detour to visit the picturesque village of Dhakmar [3820m], set against dramatic red cliffs. Legend has it these cliffs, dotted with ancient cave dwellings, were dyed by the blood of the Balmo, a huge demoness that Guru Rinpoche defeated in a duel. Two hours later, we reach our final destination, Lo-Manthang [3840m], which you are free to explore for the rest of the day.
Driving: 2 hours.
Today will be spent exploring Lo-Manthang, a fascinating town which offers unique insights into the lifestyle and beliefs of Tibetan people. Founded in 1440 by the first King of Lo, Amedpal (1388-1447), it is surrounded by a 6-metre-high and 725-metre-long wall with massive square towers. Within these are some of Nepal’s finest and largest Tibetan Buddhist gompas, whose interiors are filled with some of the finest Buddhist wall paintings in Nepal and Tibet. We visit Thubchen Lakhang, Jampa Lhakhang, Chhoede Gompa and Choprang Gompa, as well as the royal palace.
Today, we have breakfast and then head north, all the way to the border between Nepal and Tibet. Back in Lo-Manthang, you can relax for the rest of the day.
Driving: 3 hours.
Our return journey to Kathmandu begins with a long descent all the way back to Ghiling [3570m].
Driving: 5 hours.
Today we make our final descent to Jomsom [2720m] along the Kali Gandaki, taking in fabulous Himalayan scenery.
Driving: 6 hours.
After an early morning breakfast, we walk to the airport and check in for our return journey to Pokhara, a dramatic flight between two huge mountains: Annapurna [8091m] and Dhaulagiri [8167m]. After landing, your guide will transfer you to your Lakeside hotel. The rest of the day will be yours to further explore Pokhara.
Flight time: 20 minutes.
After breakfast, we start our 200-kilometre drive back to Kathmandu by Deluxe tourist bus. Sit on the left-hand side of the vehicle if you can. It offers better views of the scenery. If you prefer to shorten the journey, we can also fly back to Kathmandu from Pokhara, a spectacular mountain flight past the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh and Langtang ranges. In the evening, we get together around a farewell dinner to celebrate the successful completion of our journey together, with traditional dance and music.
Driving: approximately 7-8 hours / Flight time: 25 minutes.
