Nepal Visa Information

Foreign visitors who wish to travel to Nepal must hold a valid passport or travel document issued by their government before applying for a visa.

Most travelers can obtain a Tourist Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at several land border immigration offices in Nepal.


1. Entry Requirements

All foreign nationals must have:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months validity

  • A Nepal visa

  • A completed visa application form

Living or traveling in Nepal without a valid visa is illegal and punishable by law.


2. Visa on Arrival

Most nationalities can obtain a Visa on Arrival at the airport or land border checkpoints.

These visas are typically issued as multiple-entry tourist visas.


3. Visa on Arrival Process

Upon arrival in Nepal:

1๏ธโƒฃ Fill out the Arrival Card.
2๏ธโƒฃ Complete the Online Tourist Visa Form (airport kiosk or online before arrival).
3๏ธโƒฃ Pay the visa fee at the payment counter.
4๏ธโƒฃ Submit the passport, receipt, and application form at the immigration desk.

Your visa will be stamped in your passport once approved.


4. Countries Not Eligible for Visa on Arrival

Citizens of the following countries must obtain a visa before traveling from a Nepal embassy:

  • Nigeria

  • Ghana

  • Zimbabwe

  • Swaziland (Eswatini)

  • Cameroon

  • Somalia

  • Liberia

  • Ethiopia

  • Iraq

  • Palestine

  • Afghanistan

  • Syria


5. Visa Extension

Tourist visas can be extended at the Department of Immigration Nepal in Kathmandu or at the immigration office in Pokhara.

Extension fees:

  • Minimum 15 days: USD 45

  • Additional days: USD 3 per day

Late fines may apply if your visa expires.

Maximum stay:

  • 150 days in a calendar year


6. Visa Validity

  • Entry visa must be used within 6 months from issue date

  • Visa duration starts from the date of arrival in Nepal


7. Free (Gratis) Visa

Free visas may be issued for:

  • Children under 10 years old

  • SAARC citizens (first visit up to 30 days, except Afghanistan)

  • Chinese citizens

  • Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) card holders


8. Transit Visa

Travelers passing through Nepal can obtain a Transit Visa:

  • Validity: 48 hours

  • Fee: USD 5

  • Requires a confirmed airline ticket

Visa services are available at these entry points:

  • Tribhuvan International Airport – Kathmandu

  • Kakarvitta Border Crossing – Jhapa

  • Birgunj Border Crossing – Parsa

  • Belahiya Border Crossing – Bhairahawa

  • Nepalgunj Border Crossing – Banke

  • Dhangadhi Border Crossing – Kailali

  • Gaddachauki Border Crossing – Kanchanpur


10. Important Advice for Visitors

While traveling in Nepal:

โœ” Always carry your passport and visa
โœ” Check your visa expiry date
โœ” Respect local culture and traditions
โœ” Register at police or immigration checkpoints while trekking
โœ” Exchange currency through authorized money changers

Activities such as working or volunteering on a tourist visa are prohibited.
