Upper Mustang Monsoon Trekking

Tsarang Mustang
'But , wait!', I hear you say. 'It’s the monsoon, it’ll rain all the time. We can’t go! Quite right, Nepal does get quite a bit of rain clouds during the monsoon. But not all of it! So, while you might wonder whether the timing is right, Himalaya Trekking Team has just the trek for you.
Upper Mustang. The final stop before the border on the ancient trade route from India to Tibet. Mountains block most precipitation from falling on its high-lying plateau, wedged in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri Himal (8167m) to the west and the Annapurna massif to the east. Summertime is perfect to explore this ‘forbidden’ Kingdom of Lo, completely inaccessible to foreigners until 1992, where time seems to stand still.

SAMAR
Carved by the sweeping winds that blow up the Kali Gandaki Valley, the world’s deepest gorge, the vast barren landscapes and dramatic rock formations of Upper Mustang are probably unlike anything you have seen before. Eroded sandstone spires, prehistoric cave dwellings dug in steep canyon walls, and grassy plains surrounded by rolling ochre and red hills, dotted with ruins of centuries-old fortresses, ancient red-walled monasteries, and tiny whitewashed villages with well-tended barley and buckwheat fields.
Upper Mustang is not just a place of breathtaking wilderness. It is a land of legends and myths boasting unique cultural traditions. Tibetan Buddhism influences daily life here in a way that it no longer does further north, finding expression in age-old rituals and vibrant ceremonies like the Tiji Festival that sees hundreds of villagers converge in its fabled capital Lo Manthang every spring.

And if you needed just one more reason to venture off the beaten path besides all that, with fewer trekkers in summer, you will have Upper Mustang almost all to yourself! All the better to discover the true essence of the region and experience the friendliness of the people of Lo!
A uniquely rewarding 2- to 3-week monsoon trek for those who dare! Read on to see the full itinerary. Or drop us a line to let us know where and when you’d like to go, or what you’d like to see, and we’ll make it happen!
