Tiji Festival Date: 12-14 May, 2018

Join our exclusive Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek in this year 2018 to experience famous Tiji Festival celebrated from 12-14 May for 3 days. Booking is Open.

The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek 2018 is a wonderful and extraordinary spectacle showing the triumph of good over evil which will give you a fantastic insight into the culture and traditions of the Upper Mustang people. Dancers in brilliant costumes and masks swirl to the rhythm of drums, traditional horns and chanting by the Buddhist monks. The annual Tiji Festival lasts three days, and in the days before it starts the people of Lo make their way to Lo Manthang, filling the trails with pilgrims and mule caravans. Mustang is a magical semi-independent kingdom in the barren mountainous region between Nepal and Tibet.

The Tiji ceremony was initially religious, in order to ward off evils and suffering. As the years passed it also became a symbol of hope and strength. The people of Mustang really believe that the Festival can achieve these aims. The story of the Festival is based on the myth of the deity Dorje Shunu (also called Vajrakila) who was reborn in order to subdue the evil forces and demons that cause hell and suffering on earth. The Festival dances act out the battles Dorje Shunu had with the demons, in which he takes on different forms, subduing the evil forces and bringing peace and prosperity to the kingdom.

The present King of Mustang, Jigme Dadul Palbar Bista who is 25th in the lineage, attends the spectacle in his traditional dress. It is believed the Festival began over 500 years ago.

The Himalayan Trekking Team are delighted to be able to offer you the opportunity to visit the unique Tiji Festival trekking to the hidden valley of Upper Mustang.

High Altitude Sickness

AMS (acute mountain sickness) is a serious issue. It is the result of the failure of the body to adapt to high altitude and can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness. It usually occurs above 1,800 meters and the likelihood of being affected increases as you ascend. The way to reduce the affects of altitude is to ascend slowly, 300 meters per day above 3,000 meters until you have acclimatized. Poor acclimatization results in headache, nausea, sleeplessness, difficulty breathing and swelling of fingers and glands. The only cure for AMS is to descend to lower altitude and your guide's decision on this matter is final. When you are planning to trek above 3,000 meters we recommend not walks faster. If you will get altitude sickness please consult with your guide to go down at least 500 meters to recover.

“Total professionals and amazing value.”

(5/5)
From the very first email to Mr Uttam I have been very impressed with how totally professional the Himalaya Trekking Team have been. We took the 2017 Tiji Festival trek to Upper Mustang, a trip that lasted two weeks. During that time Mr Uttam Mr OB Mr Suntar and the three required porters were an absolute pleasure to be with. We couldn't have found a more skilled, hard working, helpful and friendly group of guys to guide and look after us. I cannot recommend this company highly enough and would/will definitely give my friends at the Himalaya Trekking Team a call to arrange my next trek. Thanks again guys, love you all.

“Outstanding value and service with 'family feel'”

(5/5)

The Himalaya Trekking Team are a professional, organised team with a distinctly friendly, 'family feel.' We took a 2 week trek into Upper Mustang which was superb! Obi and Uttam together with the porters, make each trekking day a pleasure. Everything was well organised without it feeling like a 'military expedition.' Nothing was ever too much trouble, any request/need could be accommodated. We started the trek as a client and finished it feeling like a member of the Himalaya Trekking Team family. We will be using this wonderful group of people again for our next adventure.

“Nothng is too much trouble !”

(5/5)
This setup is "first class" in every way. . Their particular strength is to be able to tailor activities to specific interests of each and every member of their group, taking into account weather and often difficult issues such as the need to change transport arrangements as local conditions dictate. The principals, Obi and Uttam, together with their guides are considerate and knowledgeable. Nothing at all was a trouble. This was my 3rd trip to Nepal ; Himalaya Trekking Team are in my experience, simply "brilliant". I was, and continue to be surprised at the quality of service for such a modest price.
